WELL-KNOWN PEOPLE FROM KAMNA GORICA

A number of men were born in Kamna Gorica who, through their political or artistic work, were written into the history books of the wider Slovenia.

Matevž Langus (1792-1855) was one of the most respected artists of his time. He was best known for his frescoes and portraits of famous as well as lesser-known personalities and children of his time. Langus's birth house is located close to the village linden tree, while in front of the community centre (Dom krajanov) there is a monument dedicated to him.

Dr. Lovro Toman  (1827-1870), a poet and politician, was the first member of the Carniolan Provincial Society and a member of the Austrian parliament in Vienna. He was the first to raise the Slovenian flag (1848) and he strived for validation of the Slovene language and national consciousness.

The Kappus Family was the only Slovenian ironworking family that was elevated to nobility – the most famous and most important family in the history of Kamna Gorica ironworking. Thanks to its contribution to the development of ironworking, in 1693 the family was elevated to nobility (pl. Pichlstain). The Kappus family mansion stood in the centre of the village, and many of the family members became reputable lawyers and officials. The Jesuit missionary Marko Anton Kappus (1657-1717), who for over 30 years worked with native Indians in the Mexican entity of Sonora, was also a member of the family.

Dr. Lovro Pogačnik (1880-1919) was a politician and the first president of the Orel Association. From 1914 he was a member of the State Assembly and later Commissioner for National Defence in the National Government of Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia (SHS).

The artist Ivan Varl (1923-1979) lived mainly in the Karst area where he was a popular teacher of art education. He was a designer, illustrator, graphic artist, painter and artistic photographer.
